Spans the axis of realism and fantasy shows the Compton Cowboys photographed during a peace ride in July 2020 against the backdrop of 12 sunsets, painted in a patchwork. The jacaranda tree, palms, and telephone wires combined with the horses point to the changing nature of LA from rural to urban.

Myth of Califia I
Myth of Califia I

30 x 24 inches oil and oil stick on canvas. Myth of Califia I, refers to the fictional legend of Calafia, a warrior queen who ruled over a kingdom of Black women living on the Island of California, often depicted as the Spirit of California, symbolizing the untamed and bountiful land prior to European settlement. Other figures hidden in this oil and oil stick piece are views from the freeways, silhouettes of female basketball players in heroic poses, figures from classical paintings that are overlaid, along with the destruction of nature in the region, either in the form of artificial destruction (the burning palm tree) or the drilling into the earth, and the black pollution weaving between the beauty of the region.
