April. It's Everything.
April is also Coachella and this Coachella I live painted at Rachel Zoe's 3rd annual "ZOEasis: A Style Retreat" before heading to the festival Saturday. I've "live" painted plenty and I savor every experience. Most of the time when I'm painting I'm isolated in my studio. I love the energy of other people around; especially people partying during my most sacred weekend of the year.
The theme was Capri, Italy in a desert (z)oasis. My activation had a third layer: Google Live Cases for the Pixel phone by Google, designed by Rachel. For the most part her collection is all glam (sequins, metallic flowers, tiny beads) and stylized zebra because your phone - one thing we can no longer survive without - should look camera ready. I incorporated these three themes into the mural where guests could test out a Pixel, see all Rachel's cases, and then have a selfie-fest in front of the mural with a Pixel set up to print the photos. Some guests wanted me in the photos with them, others wanted my brushes to fake paint. (I get it; props are a must!)
For this event and site specific activation I developed a playful 8x8 foot mural based on the client's themes. The background was a very instagrammable gradient with colors from the Capri coastline. I painted a 6 foot diameter broken circle shape that would change as I painted each section with Capri scenes or one of the live case patterns or left it open to show the background behind.
We all know Rachel Zoe is boss AF so I don't need to write about that, she's influenced patterns of speech for goodness sake. I do want to talk about Google's Pixel. I don't think I can ever take a photo of my art or a reference photo on my iPhone again. I feel like a person from the future bestowed upon me the gift of new technology. Like "2001: A Space Odyssey" style. When I expressed this to my tech/engineer boyfriend he was like "Yeah, it's awesome you didn't know that?" No. I did not. Thanks for sharing as I post sub-par process shots of all my art to IG when I could be making angels weep with a mere photo of a palette or my under-paintings with this phone. I was gifted a Pixel + Live Case at the end of the party by the ladies who watched me paint, sweat, and scoot out of frame every few mins. I picked the XL size because I try to do the opposite of what Trump would do in any situation. Google may have been trying to gift and reach fashion influencers, but by giving me this very unexpected phone they awakened an artist who can never go back. Woke me also got amazing Coachella pics on the new phone and carried around 2 phones at the festival, like lol who does that :) #teampixel #pixel4artists #idie #ArtistAreInfluencers
